Caco Winery, Pogradec: Wine and Raki From the Shores of Lake Ohrid

Grabovicë, Pogradec

The Caco family started out in 1993 making raki in Grabovicë, a village in the hills above Pogradec and Lake Ohrid. Around 2000 they began making wine, and in 2018 they rebuilt the cellar with new Italian equipment. Today the estate is run by Ersol Caco, one of the top sommeliers in Albania. They were among our first partners, in 2022.

Their labels are named after Lychnidos, the ancient name of Ohrid, the town on the far shore of the lake.

Caco grows Pamid, an old red grape typical of the Pogradec area, and Muskat Kanell, the most widely planted white in the local vineyards, alongside Merlot and a few other varieties. Their Lyhnid white blends Tokay, Muscat, and Riesling, and their red Harmoni is the one we would pour first.
