Description

Cëruja 2018 is a truly unique Albanian white wine, exclusively crafted by UKA Winery from ancient, ungrafted Cëruja vines, some of which are over 100 years old. These vines grow wild in the remote Mat region of Albania, free from human intervention, pesticides, or modern agricultural practices. UKA Winery is the only producer of this rare wine, making Cëruja 2018 a highly sought-after choice for those who value authenticity and heritage in their wines. This limited-edition vintage is the epitome of natural viticulture, preserving the tradition and character of Albania’s untouched landscapes.

Aromas and Flavor Profile

With a delicate pale green hue, Cëruja 2018 opens with enticing aromas of apple, pear, citrus, and subtle hints of vanilla, strawberry, and hazelnut. The one-year aging process enriches the wine’s structure, adding a creamy textureand enhancing its fruity vibrancy. The wine’s long, balanced finish offers a complex tasting experience, with layers of fresh fruit and gentle floral undertones, providing an immersive journey through the rich history of Albanian winemaking.

Production Method

The Cëruja grapes are hand-harvested from vines growing naturally in the wild, a rarity in modern winemaking. After careful selection, the grapes undergo cryo-maceration for 24 hours to preserve their natural freshness and aromas. Fermentation takes place over 12-15 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by one year of agingin stainless steel to allow the wine to fully develop its complex flavors.

Pairing Suggestions and Serving Temperature

Cëruja 2018 pairs beautifully with luxury dishes like foie gras, truffle cheese, oysters, and caviar, elevating any refined dining experience. To enjoy the full range of its vibrant flavors, serve the wine chilled at 8-12°C. Its well-structured body and fresh, fruity profile also make it a versatile companion for a variety of gourmet meals.

Aging Potential

Surprisingly, Cëruja 2018 has an aging potential typically associated with red wines. When stored under optimal conditions, it continues to improve in complexity and depth, revealing new dimensions of flavor with each passing year.

About the producer

Uka Winery is located in the center of Albania in the rural areas of the capital Tirana. It was established in 2005, founded by Flori Uka (winemaker), the first generation of the family in wine production. After 5 years of working in different wineries in Friuli/Veneto and 2 years of studying at the University of Udine and Conegliano in Enology, Flori returned to Albania to follow his dream of rediscovering Albania's wine values. Albania is rich in indigenous varieties and viticultural history. A history suppressed by the Ottomans and the dictatorship system. Today the new generation of winemakers is discovering the true values of this map unknown to the rest of the world. In Albania almost every rural family grows grapes. In several areas indigenous varieties are grown that have existed for hundreds of years. The vision of the Uka winery is to collect these grapes from different families throughout Albania to take the maximum potential of the same varieties. Following a cooperative-like system, Flori works with nearly 200 families throughout Albania who have indigenous grape varieties with an area of less than 1 hectare. Thus it is possible to search for the true potential of the terroir to express the maximum of our values in the wine. The purpose of the winery is to create a database of indigenous areas and varieties that are expressed to the fullest in our wines. We see our winery as a future wine museum where winelovers from around the world can come and taste Albania in a glass.
