Description
Lyhnid i Kuq 2019 is a fine Albanian wine produced by CACO Winery, named after the ancient name of Lake Ohrid, “Lyhnid”. The lake plays an important role in shaping the microclimate of the surrounding Pogradec region, directly influencing the quality of the grapes. This red wine is a blend of 60% Gems and 40% Merlot, two of the most widely planted grape varieties in the area, resulting in a wine that perfectly captures the terroir of this historic region.
Flavour and aroma profile
Lyhnid i Kuq offers a complex bouquet of red fruits, dominated by the richness of blackberry and dark cherry, along with subtle notes of spice. Merlot adds softness and depth, while Gems grapes bring a lively freshness and a touch of earthiness. The wine’s body, combined with its warmth and long finish, creates a satisfying experience that reflects the harmony between tradition and modern winemaking.
Production Method
The grapes for Lyhnid i Kuq are grown in vineyards surrounding Lake Ohrid, benefiting from the lake’s refreshing breezes, which bring out the grapes’ natural acidity and depth of flavour. The wine is carefully aged to balance the boldness of the Gems variety with the velvety texture of Merlot, offering a structured and versatile wine. With a limited production of 8,000 bottles, this wine stands out as a true expression of the region’s potential.
Pairing Suggestions and Serving Temperature
Ideal for pairing with grilled meats, roasted vegetables and mature cheeses, the 2019 Lyhnid i Kuq pairs well with a variety of dishes, making it perfect for both everyday enjoyment and special occasions. For the best experience, serve at 18°C, to allow the wine to fully develop its complex aromas and rich flavours.
